Red Mountain Ski Holidays
The Powder Highway is a legendary circular ski road trip route through the interior of British Columbia and the Kootenay Rockies. It features up to seven of Canada’s best powder destinations: Panorama, Kicking Horse, Revelstoke, Red Mountain, Whitewater, Kimberley and Fernie. Red Mountain is one of the last great, unspoiled resorts on the ‘Powder Highway’! You’ll need a fat pair of skis, extra goggles, a sense of adventure, some good company plus a good fortnight or more to experience the full tour. If you’re a good skier looking for the ultimate road trip to several bucket list destinations then this should be high on your list.
The New York Times voted Red Mountain as their "#8 Best Place in the World to Visit.”. It offers an impressive 3850 acres of prime BC ski terrain and 110 named trails spread over three mountains (Red, Granite and Grey) featuring everything from wide-open groomers to steep, powder-filled glades. With more than 2900 feet of vertical serviced by seven lifts, backed up by 26ft of annual snowfall and experiences like $10 per run in-bounds cat-skiing, there is a lot to explore at Red Mountain, and you definitely won’t have to fight for freshies! Stay at The Josie Hotel, Red’s new luxury ski-in/ski-out hotel at the base of the mountain, featuring excellent facilities, a great bar & restaurant, indulgent spa and spot-on service, The Josie was recently named among the three global finalists for World’s Best New Ski Hotel.
The vibrant little alpine mountain town of Rossland is a short shuttle ride away from the main ski base at Red Mountain. Recently voted Canada’s #1 Outdoor Town by Explore magazine, Rossland is a magnet for adventure seekers. This is a mountain community with a focus on fun, backed up with all the facilities you’d expect, full of locally owned bars and restaurants, boutique shopping, inspiring arts & culture and authentic nightlife.
Skiing in Red Mountain
Red Resort has the sort of visceral, primal appeal that persuaded prospectors of perfect powder snow to rush to the likes of Jackson Hole and Whistler before they burst into the mainstream. Red Resort actually pre-dates both of those resorts by many years, they just prefer to ski under the radar.
The skiing and riding experience at Red Mountain is beyond compare. There are three inter-linked mountains to explore – Red, Granite and Grey – all with different characters and all with stacks of terrain for varying skill levels spread over 110 marked trails. After a few warm-up laps on Red, head over to the Motherlode Chair to the summit of Granite Mountain for some really testing double black diamond drops on the north side or some nice cruisy blue groomers off the south side. Even if you’re a novice you’ll be able to join in the fun here on both sides of the mountain. On a powder day, Red really comes into its own with its exceptional gladed terrain, spread over all three mountains and available in several different colours of increasing awesomeness. Then there’s Grey Mountain out the back with a more alpine feel plus an unique $10 per run cat skiing operation giving you access to even more powder. Then for something a little different again, Red is also home to one of the world’s biggest cat-skiing operations – Big Red Cats - with nearly 20,000 acres of untracked glades and bowls on offer, an average day is between 8 and 10 runs of between 1200 and 1400 vertical. Smiles are mandatory.
