2 years living in Whistler
I caught the ski bug quite late on, having never skied as a child and first donning a pair of skis at age 21 after my girlfriend and I moved out to Whistler in 2013. After the first couple of days of tears and tantrums I was completely hooked and spent 2 ½ years in Whistler before moving to Edinburgh, joining Ski Independence and starting to tick off new resorts, including the wettest day of my life spent with colleagues who introduced me to the joys of Scottish skiing in April.
Since leaving Whistler I’ve skied in another 12 resorts across the world. My highlight was proposing in Aspen, Colorado to Harriet who took me to Whistler and introduced me to skiing back in 2013.
Many skiers, invoke the name of ‘Ullr’ the Norse God of winter and make small offerings to get him to unleash a powder dump on selected ski hills. I’d highly recommend doing a ‘snow dance’ to Ullr approximately 5-7 days before you travel.
What inspires you?
For me skiing is all about being out in nature, up in the mountains, in amongst the trees and surrounded by staggering scenery. I love that holidays in the mountains can be amazing for everyone, whether you are the most hard-core skier or simply use your skis to cruise down blue runs hopping from bar to bar. There really is something for everyone.
What's your favourite resort, and why?
Aspen and Whistler have to be my favourite resorts because of sentimental reasons but also because they are both truly fantastic ski mountains with amazing lively town/villages. They have such a lively feel whilst still retaining the personable, friendly and authentic ski town vibes.
My next trip:
My next trip is a city break in Paris, followed by a short ski break in Andermatt. A perfect combination of an exciting city to explore and taking the train through Switzerland to squeeze in some skiing in the mountains.
