"The stunning Swiss village of Andermatt is one of my favourite spots in the Alps and for those who wish to retreat for a few nights, look no further than the ineffable Chedi."

Andermatt is one of Switzerland’s great classic resorts. All the things we love are here – spectacular mountain scenery, high snow sure ski slopes and an authentic traditional resort, complete with historic bars and restaurants around a cobbled main street.

An unprecedented £1.2 million development to transform the resort in to a 21st century winter sports mecca is now well underway. The first stage of the development was the construction of a 5-star luxury hotel, The Chedi Andermatt. Already voted the best hotel in Switzerland, this property has become a firm favourite with Ski Independence clients and staff. On the slopes state-of-the-art new lifts have been installed with the ultimate aim of linking Andermatt to neighbouring Sedrun.

Skiing in Andermatt

There are two major ski areas in Andermatt.

The slopes of sunny Nätschen peaking at 2344m are fantastic for beginners and intermediates with plenty of blues and reds to enjoy. There’s a special beginner area with two dedicated lifts. Access to this area is easy thanks to an underground tunnel with an escalator which departs almost directly from the Chedi.

Across the valley, the Gemsstock ski area, accessed by cable car from the edge of the resort, offers a vertical of more than 1500m beginning near the 3,000m peak. From here there are some spectacular red and black descents including one named after the famous Swiss skier and local boy Bernhard Russi. This mountain is a real mecca for freeriders and also as a base for ski touring. Conditions are particularly idyllic mid week when the slopes are normally very quiet. You often feel as if you have the mountain to yourself.
