Postcard from Steamboat – Part 5 – Steamboat is 50!
Jenny O’Farrell’s latest Postcard from Steamboat: Being the optimist I am, let’s give thanks for these sunny days and cold temperatures that are keeping the snow dry and fresh and loose during these first few weeks of 2013. Read the rest of this entry »
Postcard from Steamboat – Part 4
Now this is what life in Ski Town USA is all about! I shovelled the driveway twice yesterday, and my husband took two turns as well as we came and went, clearing a good 10cm each time. Our back hill was grassy as recently as Saturday, so we’re relishing the workout. And I’m pleased to report that the new KIA Soul with beefy snow tires works fine in heavy snowfall with nary a road marking to be seen. Read the rest of this entry »
Postcard from Steamboat – Part 3 – On Learning to Ski
It’s DUMPING snow outside my office window right now, and my snow tires are in the garage at home awaiting installation. Uh oh! I should have escalated the importance of that task when I heard the forecast yesterday, but I was thinking more about sliding down the mountain on my snowboard than driving home from work. Winter is here – let’s embrace it with enthusiasm!
Think of a person in your life or in the news whose negativity and/or nastiness drives you mad. I’d like to start a program for mean people in which they’re required to take three days of beginner snowboard lessons. It’s an experience that brings humility, fear, and frustration, but these are followed by excitement, accomplishment and pure childlike joy. I think we could convert some pessimistic naysayers into more useful members of society in less than a week here in Steamboat, Colorado! Read the rest of this entry »
Win with Steamboat and Ski Independence
Half a century ago on the broad cattle plains around the town of Steamboat Springs, one of the local rangers – a man named John Fetcher – stopped to look up at the peaks in the distance and suddenly thought to himself, “Hey, why not put a ski lift up there?…”
Fast forward nearly 50 years and Steamboat has been developed into a world-class, family-friendly and forward-thinking ski resort with numerous accolades under its belt and an awesome snow record with over 30 feet of snow falling on average each and every year. “Champagne Powder” was coined to describe the amazing snow quality here and you’d be hard pressed to find tree skiing to rival Steamboat.
Postcard from Steamboat – Part 2
What a lovely Steamboat Springs summer it is! Yes, I live in a major tourist destination where we get lots of outside visitors, and I am darned lucky for it with all of the new faces and amentities I enjoy, but I’ve had some fun and heartwarming small town moments these past days that reminded me why I moved here 18 years ago. Postcard from Steamboat – Part 1
Welcome to our brand new blog feature “Postcard from Steamboat”. Jenny O’Farrell from Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp will be posting regular updates from her desk in Steamboat (we’re a tiny bit envious!) throughout the summer and into winter 2012/2013. Here is Part 1:
It’s another glorious summer day in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, with brilliant blue skies interrupted by the occasional puffy white cloud. I should have just enough time for this update before meeting the husband for our 3:10 tee time at the Haymaker Golf Course, a mere 5-minute drive from my hike-in/hike-out office. That’s why I have not done my 5k walk on the mountain today, taking advantage of the rather steep Thunderhead Hiking trail which starts just at the foot of the Gondola building where I spend my work days. I did not even leave my desk today for a little wander around the Steamboat Promenade, a brilliant change to the base area with the newly daylighted Burgess Creek meandering down from Ski Time Square to One Steamboat Place and beyond.
