Exciting news for fans of skiing in the USA & Canada: the Ikon Pass is a new season pass set to go head-to-head with the Epic Pass next winter, offering skiing in 26 destinations on one lift ticket. Chief Marketing Officer of Alterra Mountain Company, Erik Forsell, said, “The Ikon Pass is a collaboration of like-minded mountain destinations across North America where incredible terrain, unique character and local traditions are celebrated.”
Ikon Pass holders will be able to access resorts including Steamboat, Winter Park, Mammoth Mountain, Tremblant, Squaw Valley, Aspen Snowmass, Jackson Hole and Big Sky, Revelstoke Mountain Resort and Ski Big 3 (Banff Sunshine Village, Lake Louise, Banff Mount Norquay) all featured Ski Independence resorts and among the best ski destinations on the planet. We have two pass types available, with discounted children’s rates on offer before 9th April 2018.

The Ski Utah Interconnect – The Best Way to Ski 6 Resorts in One Day
Looking out the window to bluebird skies and a smattering of fresh snow I experienced that deep fluttering excitement that only comes from opening the curtains knowing you have a day of skiing ahead of you. Though this wasn’t going to be just any ski day; today myself and Katie from the ski team would go where few skiers are allowed to go, today we would ski 6 of Utah’s best ski resorts, crossing under ‘no entry’ ropes and boot packing up the backcountry from Deer Valley to Snowbird and everywhere in between (Park City, Solitude, Brighton and Alta) – we were doing The Ski Utah Interconnect Adventure Tour.

We pulled up to the Deer Valley car park at 8am and headed into the Snow Park Lodge where we met our guide, Chris Peters, and our fellow tour participants, a state trooper and two firefighters, both from New York. If things got sketchy out there, at least the emergency services would be present! Our guide gave us a quick run-down of the day’s plan, presented us with the obligatory “it’s not my fault if you die” waivers, then handed out avalanche transceivers and the Holy Grail of Ski Passes – the Ski Utah Gold Pass which would allow us to access to chairlifts in all the resorts we would enter. A Utah Ski Holiday to Remember
It has been a ‘slow snow year’ for much of the USA – something to do with the jetstream apparently. Seems like most of the snow got sent to Whistler and Banff! So on my recent holiday to Utah I didn’t encounter any of that legendary Utah powder, but there was plenty to ski on, and lots to impress.
Our destination was Park City, and our mode of transport was Air France / Delta Airlines from Edinburgh, via Paris. A few words on this: we flew to Paris the evening before (free stopover if under 24 hours between flights) and stayed in an airport hotel, thus eliminating the 4am start that doing the journey in one-go would entail. There were positives and negatives to this: Charles de Gaulle Airport must be one of the least user friendly airports around: Finding our way to the free hotel shuttle pick up point was a bit like orienteering! Then, horror of horrors the next morning.. French queuing. The French don’t like to stand in line. Fact.
In Utah the powder is dry…
The first thing they tell you is, “Utah is not a dry state”. Oh yeah? Well, where can I buy a bottle of wine on a Sunday? Sorry, liquor stores are closed on Sunday. OK, tomorrow then? Well no – not if Monday is a holiday. Utah may not be a dry state, but a man could get thirsty waiting for the off-licence to open as many State supermarkets are not allowed to sell wine, spirits or strong beer. More of Utah’s flirtation with prohibition later, but we were there to ski and on that subject the news is better – much better.
Our friends at Ski Independence recommended the Park City area. We’d skied British Colombia, California, Colorado, Montana and Wyoming, but there was a Utah-shaped gap in our North American skiing CV, which we thought we should put right. Deer Valley looked an appealing base particularly as it’s a ‘no boarders’ resort, but we listened to advice that Canyons might suit us better. Briefly, an area just 45 minutes’ drive from Salt Lake City’s airport comprises three principal ski sites, Park City, with Deer Valley to one side and Canyons to the other; they are not joined up, but you can buy a pass which provides access to all three. Six Resorts in Eight days
For the past 10 years Ski Independence has worked in conjunction with the Daily Mail Ski and Snowboard Magazine to help organise their annual readers’ ski trip. Over the years, hundreds of satisfied customers have enjoyed these organised and great value trips to resorts including Banff, Fernie, Steamboat, Aspen, Telluride and Whistler just to name a few. On the 1st February this year 45 readers, along with Annika and Eve from Ski Independence, packed their bags and headed for the western state of Utah to ski 6 of the State’s 14 ski resorts.

On Wednesday we lose 2 members of the Ski Independence team as they pack up their bags and make their way to Utah to lead the Daily Mail Ski and Snowboard Magazine reader trip. Starting in Park City and visiting Deer Valley, Snowbird and Canyons along the way, Annika our Groups Manager and Eve one of our Reservation Consultants, along with Henry Druce and Dave Watts, editors of the magazine and British Ex-Olympic skier Martin Bell, will spend 8 days skiing 6 of Utah’s 14 resorts.

For many years Beaver Creek has boasted about its immaculately smooth trails and it certainly isn’t an empty boast. Try “Harrier” at the top of Centennial express which is a wide tree lined blue perfect for digging two big tram lines in the slope. Watch out though as the run at the bottom turns into a blackand can often have a few moguls – could turn a bit hairy!
