Stowe Ski Holiday Guide
Stowe will appeal to those who want a winter holiday that promises not only great skiing but also excellent winter activities in a truly romantic setting.
Stowe gets more than its fair share of snow, 28 feet annually, and it is home to some of the most famous runs East of the Rockies - but what sets Stowe apart is its 18th Century village.
This is the quintessential New England town surrounded by the undulating peaks of Vermont's Green Mountains - the only appropriate response is to slow down and get in step with the relaxed local pace.
Skiing in Stowe
The ski area is 7 miles from the village; the town trolley makes a loop between the two, ensuring a regular - but never too intense, flow of happy skiers. You will get the most out of Stowe if you've got at least a couple of days skiing under your belt.
| There are some notable green runs 'Toll Road' will take you on a long loop from the top of the Four Runner Quad to the bottom of the Easy Mile chair - a beginner's playground.
However, the majority of the terrain is pure intermediate fun. You can choose from impeccably groomed trails on which to perfect technique, or glades in which to make swift, tight turns - then there's the bumps - 'Should I turn on them? Or between them?' - this could be a trick question, so to find out the answer take a 'Bumps Clinic' at the Stowe Ski School. If you're lucky your instructor will take you down 'The Front Four': 'National,' 'Goat,' 'Starr' and 'Liftline.' Have your wits about you - these are the runs that give Stowe the edge on other Eastern resorts. As this is such a beautiful setting you may want to consider taking a day out from downhill skiing to pursue a more laid-back ski activity. Stowe has four state-of-the-art cross-country ski centres and many miles of interconnected trails through the spruce and pine forests. You might even want to rug up of an evening, slip a little something into a hip flask and take a moonlit snowshoe trek along the recreation path. This two-mile path criss-crosses the West Branch River, over little wooden bridges, through farmland and into the glades. It won't take too long and will set you up for a fireside dinner. |
